Summary

The final installment in the most lauded trilogy in the history of horror novels picks up four years after Don’t Fear the Reaper as Jade returns to Proofrock, Idaho, to build a life after the years of sacrifice—only to find the Lake Witch is waiting for her in New York Times bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones’s finale。

It’s been four years in prison since Jade Daniels last saw her hometown of Proofrock, Idaho, the day she took the fall, protecting her friend Letha and her family from incrimination。 Since then, her reputation, and the town, have changed dramatically。 There’s a lot of unfinished business in Proofrock, from serial killer cultists to the rich trying to buy Western authenticity。 But there’s one aspect of Proofrock no one wants to confront…until Jade comes back to town。 The curse of the Lake Witch is waiting, and now is the time for the final stand。

New York Times bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones has crafted an epic horror trilogy of generational trauma from the Indigenous to the townies rooted in the mountains of Idaho。 It is a story of the American west written in blood。

An amazing conclusion to Jade Daniels story。 Hit a ton of emotional highs and earth shattering lows。 The end of one of the best character arcs in fiction。

"The Angel of Indian Lake" is the final installment in the Jade Daniels series, and although it's on the long side - nearly 500 pages - its breakneck pace inspired me to fly through it。 Build up? What build up? This app keeps closing on me while I’m writing reviews so my more eloquent review has disappeared and all I can say is this:SGJ turns the action and violence and horror up to 11 about half way through the novel, then said fuck it and made it crazier, but that wasn’t good enough so he made it even more insane, and then you lose count of how many characters died because can we even count that high, and fucking bears, and then a bittersweet, heartwarming ending。 Heartwarming because it’s beautiful This app keeps closing on me while I’m writing reviews so my more eloquent review has disappeared and all I can say is this:SGJ turns the action and violence and horror up to 11 about half way through the novel, then said fuck it and made it crazier, but that wasn’t good enough so he made it even more insane, and then you lose count of how many characters died because can we even count that high, and fucking bears, and then a bittersweet, heartwarming ending。 Heartwarming because it’s beautiful not because the blood covering us is warm, but that too because I’m sure even I’m bleeding right now from reading this book。 。。。more

This book was a great end to the trilogy!! So much carnage ! It was like one of Jades horror movies came to life, or maybe all of them。

Stephen Graham Jones (SGJ) has catapulted himself to the mountaintops of the horror genre。 He is, without a doubt, one of the leading voices of the new horror movement。 I’ve said it before and I am saying it again, his horror prose is second to none。 No one writes musical and poetic horror like he does。 What an absolute honor it is to have as my first full read of 2024 an advance reading copy (ARC) of The Angel of Indian Lake, the third and final installment in the most excellent Indian Lake Tri Stephen Graham Jones (SGJ) has catapulted himself to the mountaintops of the horror genre。 He is, without a doubt, one of the leading voices of the new horror movement。 I’ve said it before and I am saying it again, his horror prose is second to none。 No one writes musical and poetic horror like he does。 What an absolute honor it is to have as my first full read of 2024 an advance reading copy (ARC) of The Angel of Indian Lake, the third and final installment in the most excellent Indian Lake Trilogy, or as some also refer to it, the Jade Daniels trilogy。 This trilogy is difficult to summarize given the impressive amount of horror it covers across the entire spectrum of the genre’s history。 SGJ tackles it with respect, he takes pride in honoring it, and seems to go to great lengths to make sure he does not tarnish it, abuse of it, or even overdo it。 Everything is in just the right doses, in just the right amount, so as to satisfy us while simultaneously entertaining us and scaring the living daylights out of us。 Like in the previous two books, there is a rich tapistry of classic horror realm references interspersed with more modern ones from the 90s and 00s to satisfy both an old horror fanatic like myself and the next gen。 Only SGJ can instantly bring me back to browsing the horror section of the VHS rental store in the early 80s! Ah those cheesy covers and tacky slogans! Timeless horror classics。 It’s then and now, it’s retro and new age。 It’s horror perfection and personified。 All on a mystical backdrop that only SGJ can paint。 There’s an aura to every scene, something lingering in the background, something there but unseen and unheard yet so menacing。 SGJ is also a master at writing about grief and dread。 I will argue tooth and nail with anyone that tells me there’s no depth of emotion in horror books。 I have absolutely no shame in admitting this book made me shed a few tears。 The Angel of Indian Lake is also packed with so many magical and mystical moments that I got major goosebumps during several passages。 Steering clear of any potential spoilers, I will conclude this review by first stating that The Angel of Indian Lake is in and of itself an excellent book while also being a superb ending to an incredible trilogy。 And secondly, I must restate something I have mentioned before in previous reviews… no one writes acknowledgments like Stephen Graham Jones。 They are always so generous and insightful, like the absolute best bonus features that were included in special edition DVDs。 。。。more

The Angel of Indian Lake is a phenomenal ending to the trilogy。 It is one of those books that drives you to keep reading。 Both a violent slasher and a thought provoking exploration of what secrets America would like to keep buried, even if the land won't forget。 The Angel of Indian Lake is a phenomenal ending to the trilogy。 It is one of those books that drives you to keep reading。 Both a violent slasher and a thought provoking exploration of what secrets America would like to keep buried, even if the land won't forget。 。。。more

The answer is a lot。This book hurt me to read, and I mean that in the best way possible。 I knew the third entry meant loss and heartbreak, but that doesn't mean I have to like it。 Jade is much less eager in this novel, and watching her grow has been such a pleasure。 Not only has she grown up, she's also created a family for herself。 She has so much to lose this time around。 The thing I love most about Jade is that she is so selfless。 She is willing to walk away and leave if that's what Letha needs。 What the town needs。 She would end her life if that meant the massacres would stop。This book is so much more raw and honest than the previous entries, and it's such a cathartic read。 Sure, we lose some characters we love, but the comeuppance other characters get is so sweet。 And we get some surprise guests who also make a return to Proofrock。 The only thing that made this not a 5-star read for me is that I found myself having to reread passages a few times because the train of thought was a little jumbled。 I couldn't understand what was happening so I would page back, reread, and then move forward。Overall, this was an enjoyable bloodbath。Thanks to Netgalley and Saga for the ARC。 。。。more

Giving four stars bc I have some issues:—I don’t buy that Jade would be allowed to or have any desire to teach。 It’s only a brief part of the story at the beginning but it bugged me from the start。 —Because there are SO many threads, some get tied up too quickly/conveniently to be satisfying。 —It takes half the book for the story to really get going。 BUT the ending made up for them。 I don’t often cry with books but there are moments in this book that sing, that squeezed my heart until it burst, Giving four stars bc I have some issues:—I don’t buy that Jade would be allowed to or have any desire to teach。 It’s only a brief part of the story at the beginning but it bugged me from the start。 —Because there are SO many threads, some get tied up too quickly/conveniently to be satisfying。 —It takes half the book for the story to really get going。 BUT the ending made up for them。 I don’t often cry with books but there are moments in this book that sing, that squeezed my heart until it burst, and I had no choice。 They make it worth it all for me。 It took me two weeks to read the first half, but I finished the second within a couple of days。 I think if you love Jade and her story, you will be pleased with this ending。 She’s confusing and sporadic and different but she’s got so much heart and that rings true in the end。 。。。more

I have this thing about Final Girls。 Most especially about disabled Final Girls。 They seem to be a rarity at first blush, but when it comes right down to it, we all end up that way at one time or another。 Still, very few tales of terror deal with the aftermath for the town saviors。 Stephen Graham Jones' Indian Lake trilogy has made a point of showing the meaty, pulsing underbelly of survival - and its consequences。Jade Daniels's journey from My Heart Is A Chainsaw to now, in the Angel of Indian I have this thing about Final Girls。 Most especially about disabled Final Girls。 They seem to be a rarity at first blush, but when it comes right down to it, we all end up that way at one time or another。 Still, very few tales of terror deal with the aftermath for the town saviors。 Stephen Graham Jones' Indian Lake trilogy has made a point of showing the meaty, pulsing underbelly of survival - and its consequences。Jade Daniels's journey from My Heart Is A Chainsaw to now, in the Angel of Indian Lake, has been fraught with trauma of all shapes and sizes。 From the angry girl who wished vengeance on a town that by and large wrote off her pain or pretended it didn't exist to fierce protector of all she loves, Jade has struggled, yes, but fought her way toward a life she can be proud of living。I have, over the course of being given the opportunity to review the Indian Lake Trilogy as a whole, taken every chance to wax poetic about finding a version of myself in Jade that I never thought I'd quite see committed to paper unless I got brave enough to do it。 Her love of media, unshakeable belief in right and wrong, and fierce drive to protect the ones she cares for made her a Final Girl long before she was able to consider the idea for herself。Even now, I'm not sure she believes herself worthy of the title。 But when has a Final Girl ever truly owned the title for themselves? It is a heady label we bestow upon the strongest of survivors, and rightly, but how comfortable a crown is it when it is soaked in the blood and grime of loss?Jade's evolution is most prominent when tracing the way she views and uses horror across the trilogy。 In Chainsaw it is a virtually impenetrable shield and weapon。 She would give anything to have the chance to live in her favorite genre, no matter the cost to those around her, because in her eyes the town deserves to be awash in the gore that is a prerequisite of it。 There are enough guilty parties in Proofrock to make bloody justice worth the price。 She speaks to us - and her history teacher, via her essays - almost exclusively from behind slasher-tinted glasses。 Naturally this makes for a read that is great fun for any slasher fan, playing "spot the reference" on every page, yet there is more than that going on beneath the surface。 The movies Jade touches on are not done so at random。 She's having the time of her life, showing someone she cares about her most passionate interest, but it becomes clear as the novel progresses that she is also calling out for help。 For someone to listen。 For anyone to see what she has come out of, and tell her it will be okay。By the time we get to Don't Fear the Reaper, we're playing full time not just in Jade's world, but the rules and dynamics of a slasher trilogy。 We get new perspectives, a softer version of our favorite fighter, and plenty of up-the-ante level gore all good slasher fans know is virtually a requirement for any sequel worth its salt。The Jade of Reaper is on a quest to find the Final Girl who will save Proofrock while she heals from her own deep emotional and physical wounds from the last novel。 After the losses she's taken, no matter that she had a hand in saving the town, she not only doesn't believe herself worthy of the title of Final Girl, we also see her start to try and divorce herself from the genre that made her who she is。 She is doing everything she can to pass the proverbial torch, and learning just how quickly the media world moves on without her there to consume it。 Having gone to prison for what happened at the end of Chainsaw, she finds herself free and unmoored in a world of references she cannot place, which consequently begins to make her feel like she might be missing pieces of the pattern of events in her own life that a more savvy slasher connoisseur is more qualified to notice。The thing is, though, is it takes more than just familiarity with the tropes of survival to be a survivor。 And if Jade is anything, she is a survivor to the end。 And even more than that, Jade is a protector。 Even at her most raw, vulnerable, aching core, there is always someone on the other end of the pain worth protecting。 And with that mindset, we enter into The Angel of Indian Lake。 Now, Jade is the teacher of Proofrock high school's history class where she once waxed poetic at every opportunity。 What was suggested in Chainsaw - that Jade be the one teaching the teacher - has come full circle。 Naturally, in her newfound position, she grants levels of flexibility to her students' writing assignments most of us would envy in school。 If they can defend it, it seems, it is permitted。 Jade being who she is, of course, it is through just this kind of flexible assignment structure that we are thrown headfirst into Proofrock's latest bloodbath。Full circle is the name of the game in Angel。 There are bits and pieces of the previous two entries sprinkled within this novel to drive home just how impacted Jade's hometown is by the horrific events of the last several years。 It is not only the people who remember - though there does seem to be a new supernatural folk tale afoot in the woods - but the land。 Meanwhile, badly as she wants to move on from her gore-soaked past and forget it all together, we find Jade letting hints of her old self out to play as she makes quiet and calculated moves to protect the students of her school from having to go through the traumatic exposures she did。She mourns those she lost in her own unique and pointed ways, but she has made a choice in Angel that is all but revolutionary for her。 The girl who would have given herself over to the lake but a few short years before has finally decided to live。 Not out of need, or spite, or anger, but out of love and the desire to protect that has always been at her center。 With Angel we finally watch Jade start to see herself the way everyone around her always has: as a strong, vulnerable, powerful, complex woman capable of extraordinary efforts to make the world a better place than she found it。Stephen Graham Jones bids Jade farewell with this entry into the Indian Lake trilogy, and parting is such sweet, slashery sorrow。 But what a ride it was, and how fulfilling to know that we can keep her with us the same way she has kept her favorite films。 Jade Daniels is immortalized into my - and I am certain several others - personal Final Girl Hall of Fame, ready to give me strength when I need her most。 And isn't that the kind of thing she's always wanted?Angel of Indian Lake comes to a bookstore near you from Simon & Schuster/Saga Press on March 26, 2024。 I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to receive an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review。 I just finished the ARC provided by NetGalley for Stephen Graham Jones’ (@SGJ72) The Angel of Indian Lake (out on 3/26/24)。 Between Jade’s perfect voice, the highest stakes and body counts she’s faced, and an ending that made me tear up in the best possible way, this is such a fitting conclusion to Jones’ gory trilogy。As all slasher trilogies tend to do, the third installment upends everything you think you know, forcing your beloved characters to face challenges and losses that push them much f I just finished the ARC provided by NetGalley for Stephen Graham Jones’ (@SGJ72) The Angel of Indian Lake (out on 3/26/24)。 Between Jade’s perfect voice, the highest stakes and body counts she’s faced, and an ending that made me tear up in the best possible way, this is such a fitting conclusion to Jones’ gory trilogy。As all slasher trilogies tend to do, the third installment upends everything you think you know, forcing your beloved characters to face challenges and losses that push them much further than they have gone in previous entries。 In this book, old villains return in surprising ways, and every time Jade thinks she is out of the woods, whether literally or figuratively, she gets cornered by someone from her past who will not let her live in peace。 Speaking of Jade’s voice, while she asks a lot of questions, that narrative tic felt earned for a young woman who has fought against horrors both mortal and supernatural and who feels tremendous guilt over all the residents of Proofrock who meet their grisly, violent ends。 Why shouldn’t Jade have doubts and uncertainty?Jade has always been readers’ final girl, even if she won’t admit it to herself, seeing everything she wishes she could be in her heroine, Leetha Mondragon, but this novel ends the trilogy in a way that shows both how much she has learned and how much she has left to teach。 。。。more

I'm so glad I re-read the first two books before starting this one。 I feel that is the only way to truly appreciate all that this book has to offer, and -- quite frankly -- I still feel like I need another re-read of this one。 While our third journey with Jade feels so complete, like a bow has been wrapped so neatly around our hearts, I still yearn for more。 Jade is the kind of character you want to spend a lifetime with。 This third installment, like any good third installment, is packed with mo I'm so glad I re-read the first two books before starting this one。 I feel that is the only way to truly appreciate all that this book has to offer, and -- quite frankly -- I still feel like I need another re-read of this one。 While our third journey with Jade feels so complete, like a bow has been wrapped so neatly around our hearts, I still yearn for more。 Jade is the kind of character you want to spend a lifetime with。 This third installment, like any good third installment, is packed with more action and blood than the first two。 It feels like a real Frankenstein's monster of horror movies, with so many unlikely pieces coming together to create a beast you can't help but root for。 This book felt like it was made of glue, being so hard to put down, sometimes taking a boot or two for leverage。 But at the same time, I was scared to put it down, to find out what happens to Jade, Letha and the town of Proofrock。 I can't recommend this one enough。 Thank you, Stephen, for this gift。 I'll be on the lookout for the next final girl。 。。。more

Full Disclosure: I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of The Angel of Indian Lake by Stephen Graham Jones from Saga Press via NetGalley。The Angel of Indian Lake is the third book in the Indian Lake Trilogy by Stephen Graham Jones。 While you could start here, it does make reference to things that happened in the prior two books。 That won't stop your enjoyment of this book, but it could spoil some things if you decide to go back and read the first two。 The Angel of Indian Lake is a great rid for p Full Disclosure: I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of The Angel of Indian Lake by Stephen Graham Jones from Saga Press via NetGalley。The Angel of Indian Lake is the third book in the Indian Lake Trilogy by Stephen Graham Jones。 While you could start here, it does make reference to things that happened in the prior two books。 That won't stop your enjoyment of this book, but it could spoil some things if you decide to go back and read the first two。 The Angel of Indian Lake is a great rid for people who enjoy horror films, especially slasher films。 There are many references to the classics, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Scream, etc。 Jade, the main character, is a big fan and knows all the rules which may be how she has survived to book three even though she doesn't consider herself a final girl。 And just like in horror films, everyone else seems oblivious to the very obvious signs that they are living in one。 Jade does have some allies though, and you will be biting your nails wondering if they will survive to the last page。 In case you haven't figured it out yet, this isn't a book for the squeamish。 There's blood and gore aplenty。 You are spared a bit because the action is interspersed with reports detailing Jade's behavior as observed by an investigator。 If you like an epistolary story like I do, this will scratch that itch。 。。。more
